BALL Family
man James BALL‏‎, son of John BALL and Sara BULLARD‏.
Born ‎7 Mar 1670 Watertown, Middlesex Co., Mass., died ‎22 Feb 1729 Watertown, Middlesex Co., Mass.‎, 58 years
JAMES BALL, b. Watertown, Massachusetts March 7, 1670,[6/33] d. Watertown Feb. 24, 1729-30,[7/90] m. Jan. 16, 1693-4 ELIZABETH FISKE, b. Watertown Jan. 11, 1667-8,[6/29] d. 1740.
James Ball was chosen at town meeting March 28, 1698 as one of the "hogereifes".[4/2:118] I'm not exactly clear what this job was, but it appears these men looked into the hogs and cattle of the town and sometimes levied fines regarding livestock.
At town meeting March 2, 1723-4 James was chosen as one of the "Tythingmen".[4/2:307] This was either James Ball or may have been hi s son James. In March 1706 James and Elizabeth Ball, for six pounds, sold to Scipio Finney, negro, 12 acres, bounded
north by Allen Flagg, south and east by Chester Meadow, and west by Jonathan Sanders.[1/676] This is the negro sought by the town in 1694 who may have been hidden and/or protected by James' father. This may be the James Ball who appears on a list of
Watertown men dated April 15, 1690 "Being listed in the service of the country against the French". [5/109] James Ball's will is dated Feb. 21, 1729-30. He died the next day.Like his forbears, James' profession was that of a weaver, but he also kept a
farm and livestock as he called himself "husbandman" in his will. Mentioned in the will are his youngest son John, sons James and Nathan, eldest daughter Sarah Hastings, daughters Abigail Livermore, Elizabeth Fuller, and Susannah Stearns. The will was
witnessed by John Cutting, John Chadwick, and Thomas Harrington.[2/19:39]

and marred immediately after to Sarah HARRINGTON, born 1703-04.

three miles therefrom. He married a second wife Dinah Fay, former wife of his nephew James.
3.
man John BALL‏
Born ‎22 Jul 1697 Watertown, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, died ‎11 Jan 1756 Worcester, Worcester Co., Massachusetts‎, 58 years, buried ‎ Worcester Common
Wife (1)Abigail and John resided in Watertown and Waltham
Wife (2)Lydia and John resided in Waltham until about 1745 and they moved to Worcester.
(Note: While the records do not verify, it is believed that he had another child Joshua BALL, born abt 1745-6.)
The next portion is quoted from "The Descendants of John Ball of Watertown, Massachusetts 1630-1635" by Mr Frank D. Warren:
In some of the records we find Mary CLARK given as the second wife of John BALL 211 and Lydia PERRY as his third wife. Then again, Mary CLARK is given as second wife of John BALL.
the Watertown Vital Records have four children definitely assigned to John as Abigail HARRINGTON - namely; Grace, born 1721, Amitee, b. 1723, Abigail, b. 1724 and Samuel, b. 1726-dies 1726. From here the Waltham Vital Records takes up th e thread and
records wife Abigail's death in 1728 and Amitie's death in 1738. This shows that John was living in Watertown in 1726 and in Waltham in 1728. The Waltham Vital Records five the marriage of John & Mary BENJAMIN in 1725. Thi s John I have as son of
John and Bethiah MEDAP and 1st cousin of John and Abigail Harrington. The John just mentioned is the one whom Bond and the Clark Genealogy say married second Mary CLARK. Beginning the year following the marriage of John and Mary BENJAMIN, the Waltham
Vital Records have an unbroken record of births to 'John and Mary' up to 1752, when Mary BENJAMIN died. The year following 1753 John married Anna HARRINGTON and the Waltham Vital Records continues with five or six births to 'John & Anna' all of which
died. The Waltham vital Records give the marriage of John and Lydia PERRY in 1739 and also births to 'John & Lydia' of Lydia, Mary, John, Josi
ah and Isaac.
Now there may have been two 'John & Marys'(I mean two 'Johns' and two 'Marys') in Waltham at the same time, (1728-1739) and the children recorded under 'John & Mary' may have been indiscriminately born to both couples; however there are no conflicts in
the dates of birth and they follow at the more or less standard interval for those times. If there were two couples (John & Mary), one couple must have been John and Mary BENJAMIN and the other may have been John and Mary CLARK . Apparently others
think so, for out of the dozen or so children listed to 'John & Mary' they have selected James, Samuel and Nathan as belonging to John and Mary CLARK and have abandoned the others arbitratily to John and Mary BENJA MIN. The reason undobtedly is that
this solution best fits the terms of John will.
Now to the will: first he mentions his wife Lydia; second, his daughter Anna, wife of BARTLETT; third "my eldest sone, James"; then follow the names of the remaining sons, beginning with Daniel, finally his daugher Mary as mentioned. Undoubtedly, all
of the above were living in 1756 and I believe they were named in the will in the order of their births. I accept the above list in the order named, but do not pretend to know whether the mother of James, Daniel, Samuel and Nathan was Abigail
HARRINGTON or Mary CLARK. Right here comes the stickler as far as Mary CLARK adherents are concerned. The will states that James was the oldest son and it mentions Anna before James. This leads me to suppose that both Anna and James were oldest that
Daniel. Now, Daniel 's birth is given in the Shrewsbury records as 1720 and if Anna and James were ahead of him, they must have fitted in along 1718-19. On the other hand, if Daniel was born to Mary CLARK, it would have been 1731 or after, and he
married in 1749 . Some things do not seem to be reconciled, but why quarrel? We all agree that they lived, and ther later history is much in agreement. I cannot see how it affects a Ball Genealogy as it which was the mother of whom. If were
concerned wit h a Clark Genealogy, it would be a different matter, and apparently the writer of the latter was willing to make no clain on the Ball family for it descendants.
This concludes Mr Warren summation of the John BALL.
