BRATTLEBORO ? Rachel (Hammond) Hurlburt, 84, died June 10, 2005, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 2, 1921, in Reading, the daughter of Duane Daniel Hammond and Maude Goss-French Hammond.
She attended school in Vermont, graduated from Vista High School in California, and attended college at UCLA.
She married Harold Hurlburt Sr. on Sept. 20, 1941, in Stowe.
Mrs. Hurlburt began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Hanksville. She continued teaching elementary school while in California. Her last teaching jobs were in East Dover and Williamsville.
She was a member of West Brattleboro Congregational Church.
She enjoyed learning, reading, teaching, nature and gardening.
Survivors include a daughter, Diana Meckle of Brattleboro; two stepsons, Harold Hurlburt Jr. of East Montpelier and Kenneth Hurlburt of Waitsfield; and a sister, Ruth Reynolds of Morrisville; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; several
great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Hurlburt was predeceased by her husband on Feb. 25, 1985; a daughter, Rita Hurlburt; a half-sister, Jesse French; and two brothers, Holmes Hammond and Gordon Hammond.
The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in River Bank Cemetery in Stowe.
A reception will follow at Waterbury-Stowe Fish & Game Club on Route 100.
A funeral service will be held at a later date at West Brattleboro Congregational Church.
